“A community of diverse people”, this is part of the NIU mission statement. While researching to values and the mission of this University, This particular phrase stood out to me. I have lived in DeKalb County my entire life, and one thing that I can believe one hundred percent in, is that the community is diverse.
Any given day at NIU you can walk around campus and see all different walks of people. Young, old, experienced, graduated, large, tall, small, short, Asian, American, African American, Middle Eastern, European. I believe this to be the most unique part of the NIU community, not only that it’s diverse; but that these different people are all interacting, hanging out, helping each other learn, and coe-existing together. I wanted the structure that I built to allude to that thought. There are seven pillars, representing the seven colleges within NIU. Each pillar has its own unique qualities and no pillar is exactly the same as the other. Just as no one person or one college is exactly like the other. When standing in exactly the right spot, you can see that this community of diverse pillars come together to form the letters ‘N’, ‘I’, and ‘U’. When not standing in exactly the right spot you might miss the formation and the congregating of all of these different pillars. Meaning, in life we may wander through all these people, weave in and out; and if we don’t slow down and take in our surroundings, or spend time really looking and learning about the people and things around us, we might miss out on some truly beautiful things in this place. I hope this monument makes people stop, think, and learn together about the joys of being apart of this amazing community of diverse people at NIU.
